Bengaluru's wet months are long rather than dramatic, and that is exactly why skin problems get missed. Nothing looks urgent until it does.
The routine
Ten minutes, twice a week, hands through the coat rather than a brush over the top of it. You are feeling for lumps, scabs, ticks and damp patches near the skin. Found early, each of those is nothing. Found late, each is a course of medication.
Paws and ears
Check between the pads after every walk. Grass seeds and grit lodge there, and a damp pad is where fungal trouble starts. Ears should be dry and odourless; a yeasty smell is the earliest sign of an infection.
Drying
Towel properly, and not onto the bed. A dog that sleeps damp for four months will develop something. Give it a drying spot and use it every time.
What not to do
Do not bathe more often to compensate. Over-bathing strips the coat's oils and makes the skin worse, not better. Brushing beats washing in this climate.
When to stop managing it yourself
Persistent scratching in one spot, hair loss, or a patch that is warm to the touch all need a vet rather than another week of observation.
