Choosing a breed for a Bengaluru flat: start with your week, not the breed

The honest questions to answer before you pick, and what they rule in and out.

Almost every mismatched placement we see started with someone choosing a breed they liked the look of and fitting their life around it afterwards. It works better the other way.

Question one: how many hours is the flat empty?

If the answer is eleven, a sociable, high-energy breed will not fill the gap quietly. It will find something to do and you will not enjoy the result. Either arrange a break in the day or choose a more independent animal - a cat, or one of the calmer small breeds.

Question two: who does the seven a.m. walk?

Not who intends to. Who actually will, in December, when it is raining. If the honest answer is nobody, a dog is the wrong choice and we will say so.

Question three: how much grooming will really happen?

A long-coated breed in this climate needs consistent work. Low-shedding is not the same as low-maintenance - Poodles, Bichons and Shih Tzus shed little precisely because the coat keeps growing and needs clipping.

What tends to work here

Smaller, calmer breeds and cats suit Bengaluru flats well. So do some larger breeds, if someone is home. The size of the animal matters less than the shape of your week.
